PHILADELPHIA -- The Montreal Canadiens got bigger in Saturdays NHL draft but couldnt resist the allure of five-foot-eight Sherbrooke centre Daniel Audette. Its other five picks were all six foot or better, with three at 6-1 or above. Third-round pick Brett Lernout stands six foot four and weighs 206 pounds. "Hes a big strong strapping defenceman," Trevor Timmins, Montreals director of amateur scouting, said of Lernout. "Hes tough as nails and has a heavy shot." Timmins had talked prior to the draft about the Habs wanting to "get bigger, stronger, faster." "But at the same time if theres a player thats undersized there and hes a good hockey player, then hes hard to pass. Thats the situation here with Daniel -- similar to a Brendan Gallagher in his draft year. You simply cant go by a player with that much ability." Gallagher is five foot nine and 180 pounds but plays much larger. The 175-pound Audette had 21 goals and 55 assists in 68 games last season. Audette, the son of Habs amateur scout and former NHLer Donald Audette, went in the fifth round. Timmins said Audette Sr. had not been involved in any of the pre-draft discussion on his son. In fact, Donald was told to spend the afternoon in the stands with his wife and son until Daniel got drafted. Donald collected 260 goals and 249 assists 735 career NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, Atlanta Thrashers, Dallas Stars, Montreal and Florida Panthers. The Canadiens traded up to get Lernout, a Swift Current defenceman. They gave up their third-round pick (87th overall) and fourth-round pick (117th overall) to get Arizonas third-rounder (73rd overall). "I looked at the team picking in front of us and I thought there was a good chance that he wouldnt be there (by Montreals pick) ... We wanted to add some size on defence and he was a good fit for us there," said Timmins. Montreal took AJHL defenceman Nikolas Koberstein (125th overall) and Audette (147th overall) in the fifth round, USHL goalie Hayden Hawkey (177th overall) in the sixth round and Ontario Junior Hockey League forward Jake Evans (207th overall) in the seventh round. Montreal used its first-round pick Friday to take Russian forward Nikita Scherbak of the Saskatoon Blades 26th overall. Thanks to reaching the Eastern Conference final, the Canadiens draft position was well down this year. "If you take a look at our picks in every round, theyre pretty late. So the asset value of the picks we had wasnt near as high as last year or the year before," Timmins said. "Thats why we had to make that trade in the third (round) to move up. "We had to wait out turn pretty long in each round. Ill tell you (how we did) a few years down the road. But were happy with the guys we got. Theyre the guys we targeted and we still had guys left on the list that we wanted to draft." The Habs went "under the radar" on Koberstein, according to their scouting director. "I think this guy has good upside and long-range projection," he said. "Hes a great kid and has tons of character but hes a good hockey player too." Koberstein is committed to play at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks after one more year with the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Timmins sees him as a five-year player, meaning he has one year at Junior A and four at college. Hawkey, USHL goalie of the year, is committed to play collegiate hockey at Providence. "Hes like money in the bank," said Timmins. Evans is headed to Notre Dame. "Hes a skilled centre with great playmaking ability," said Timmins. Marlins Tyler Kinley Jersey . So what happens? Stevenson lands a huge left to Dawsons temple only 76 seconds into the opening round and walks away with the championship belt. "I said Id knock him out," said Stevenson (21-1). Marlins Trevor Richards Jersey . There is no argument that the line of Pacioretty, David Desharnais and Thomas Vanek was one of the hottest in the NHL leading into the post-season, and they did combine for three goals and seven points, but it was the depth of all four lines that helped propel Montreal. http://www.cheapmarlinsjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=marlins-javy-guerra-jersey. LOUIS -- When Braves second baseman Tyler Pastornicky backpedaled into shallow right field to catch the popup and Jason Heyward didnt arrive fast enough to take charge, Kolten Wong got the green light. The rookie raced home with the tying run on surely the shortest sacrifice fly of Yadier Molinas career, one of many big plays the St. Louis Cardinals made with their legs in a 4-1 victory over the slumping Atlanta Braves on Saturday. "By the time I realized I could get there, it would have been tough to call him off," Heyward said. "Heads up play on their part by sending the runner." Wong and Peter Bourjos each had a pair of bunt singles, three of them fueling rallies. Bourjos got picked off after beating out a bunt leading off the third, but squeezed home an insurance run in the seventh. "I think today was probably one of the best representations of what speed can do for us," manager Mike Matheny said. "A lot of guys made things happen, getting on base and creating havoc." Wong set up the tying run by beating out a bunt to lead off the fourth. He squared around for another hit in the sixth and drew a wild throw from catcher Evan Gattis while stealing second, producing the go-ahead run. The Cardinals matched their season high with their fourth straight win. Miller (6-2) allowed a run and five hits in seven innings, one inning longer than his previous high this season. He matched his season best with seven strikeouts, fanning B.J. Upton three times, and called it his best outing of the year "for sure." "I felt like we did a really good job of keeping the hitters off-balance and getting ahead in the count," Miller said. "Just an all-around good day, but at the same time theres still room for improvement." Trevor Rosenthal fanned two in the ninth inning, with Upton striking out a fourth time, to earn his 13th save in 14 chances. He has a save in three straight games for the second time in his career. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was ejected in the ffifth inning for arguing a call that led to a bunt double play.dddddddddddd. He could face a fine for charging out of the dugout a second time and thought the ball was "maybe 5, 6 inches foul." "Thats what I kept asking: Can we get some help from one of the guys on the line?" Gonzalez said. "What are you going to do? We still scored one run. "But that would have been a nice opportunity to try again to advance a runner," he added. Andrelton Simmons had three hits for Atlanta, which lost its third in a row and scored fewer than three runs for the 19th time in 41 games this season. Miller has won six straight decisions in seven starts after losing his first two of the season. The last three St. Louis starters have worked seven innings. In the fifth, Harang stayed in the batters box after his attempt to sacrifice Simmons to third didnt go far. Molina pounced on the ball and threw to third, with shortstop Jhonny Peralta covering, for a tag play. Peralta had an easy relay to first to finish with second baseman Wong covering for an unusual 2-6-4 double play. "What stinks is sometimes its those little plays that change the tempo of the game," Harang said. "If its called four, then I can get another one down. Its tough, you know." The Braves capitalized on shoddy defence to take the early lead. Simmons scored from first on Harangs two-out single -- the pitchers first hit of the year. Harang took third after left fielder Matt Holliday threw behind him, then trotted home after Wongs wild throw from second. NOTES: Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia will make his first start since injuring his shoulder last May in the series finale, with Gavin Floyd (0-1, 2.70) starting for Atlanta. ... The attendance of 44,981 was the Cardinals eighth sellout. ... B.J. Upton made a nice running shoe-top catch on Allen Craigs sinking fly ball to start the second. ... The Braves are 1-4 against the Cardinals and 8-1 against the rest of the NL Central. ... Molina is 10 for 21 the last six games.
