New York Rangers 4 Winnipeg Jets 2 (Jets 30-29-9, home 15-14-6) – The loss drops the Jets to six points back of the Dallas Stars, after Dallas picked up a single point in a shootout loss to Calgary. The Stars were up 3-1 in the third. Stars and Jets will meet at the MTS Centre Sunday night (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) in what is a must win for the Jets. The Jets and Stars will meet in Dallas later this month, the Stars have two games in hand. For the Jets its six straight without a win, five straight at home without a win. The Jets lost Ondrej Pavelec with a lower body injury after the first period and lost Chris Thorburn early in the second with a lower body injury after he blocked a shot. The Rangers opened the scoring at 1:15, Carl Hagelin deflecting a shot past Pavelec. The goal came off a face off following a very debatable icing call against the Jets. But the Jets got that one back 1:18 later, Dustin Byfuglien batting home a rebound for his 17th of the year and fourth in the last four games. Blake Wheeler and Toby Enstrom drew assists. 53 seconds later the Jets took the lead with Andrew Ladd beating Henrik Lundqvist with a wrist shot for his second in as many games and 19th of the year. Ladd has now scored five goals in the last seven games. The goal gives him a team leading 65 since the team relocated to Winnipeg. Assists went to Bryan Little and Michael Frolik. Little extending his point streak to four games. Chris Kreider with his 17th would tie the game at 11:28, with the Jets outshooting the Rangers 11-8. Al Montoya came out to start the second and the Jets came out strong, but despite a number of great chances could not get the go ahead goal. As the Rangers finished killing back to back penalties, Martin St. Louis came out of the penalty box and set up Hagelin for his second of the game at 19:52 of the period to give the Rangers the lead. The Rangers are 21-1-1 when leading after two. Shots in the second were 11-7 Jets. The Jets had to kill a penalty early in the third but then again applied pressure on the Rangers. Lundqvist was terrific in picking up his 301st win, tying Mike Richter for the franchise lead. Hagelins first NHL hat-trick made it a 4-2 game and the Rangers locked it down after that. Shots in the third were 10-8 Jets and 32-23 Jets over the game. Jacob Trouba led the Jets in ice time for the 12th time this season at 23:42, Wheeler had six shots on goal, Evander Kane five, but both saw their goalless streaks go to seven for Wheeler and eleven for Kane. Jim Slater was the best face-off man winning 10 of 15. The penalty kill was four for four, the power play zero for four. "We need more out of our power play," said Captain Ladd post-game. "But the guys in here have not given up." Coach Paul Maurice also felt the struggling power play was a key part of the game. "Its tough. We had a lot of pressure before they scored their second and their third. And then the 3-2 goal clearly changed how we moved the puck and how we moved some things around – an important piece to the game. It was tough." In many parts of the game the Jets have been better in the past six games than in a lot of the games they won after the coaching change. It was a frustrated dressing room post game. "There should be frustration. We had too many good looks, too many blocked shots." Six points out with teams in between puts the Jets in a difficult spot (14 games remain), with sweeping the home and home with Dallas now a must, and clean wins to boot, no overtime. The chase resumes Sunday against the Stars (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) with the season on the line. Torrey Smith Jersey . Three plays after his second score, teammate Bennett Jackson delivered the final blow -- a 34-yard interception return for a score. On a night No. 21 Notre Dame faced a stiff challenge from its oldest in-state rival, the late scoring flurry from Daniels and Jackson finally knocked out the Boilermakers 31-24 on Saturday night. "Losing sucks and thats something we dont want to do here at Notre Dame," Daniels said. "We know everybody hates us, a lot of people hate us and it makes us pretty happy to make them mad." It wasnt supposed to be this tough for Notre Dame (2-1), which won its sixth straight in the 85-game series that has been played every year since 1946. The Irish were installed as a three-touchdown favourite against a foe that had struggled the previous two weeks. But the Boilermakers who showed up Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium didnt look anything like the team Notre Dame had watched on tape all week. Quarterback Tommy Rees spent most of the first half trying to dodge the blitz-happy Boilermakers. The running game was in shambles, and a frustrated coach Brian Kelly kept flailing his arms in the air. Even after a halftime pep talk in which the fiery Kelly explained to Rees and his offence they needed to calm down, Notre Dame still found itself trading jabs with Purdue early in the second half. Daniels changed everything with an acrobatic 9-yard TD catch. On the next Irish offensive play, he fought a defender down for an 82-yard catch-and-run that changed the game. Jackson finally finished it off with the interception return to help the Irish avoid back-to-back regular season losses for the first time in more than two years. On a night the Irish averaged just 2.5 yards on 37 carries, Rees and Daniels had to carry the offence. Rees was 20 of 33 for 309 yards with two scores, no interceptions and received a game ball. Daniels had eight catches for 167 yards and two scores. "I was never worried in the sense there was a panic," Kelly said. "I felt really confident that we were going to win the football game. We just needed to settle down a little bit." Until then, the surprisingg Boilermakers played the Irish to a virtual draw.dddddddddddd Henry, who had struggled the first two weeks, finished 25 of 40 for 256 yards with three touchdown passes -- his first three of the year. Akeem Hunt played like the feature back the Boilermakers needed, rushing 12 times for 22 yards and catching nine passes for 72 yards and a score. The defence, which worn down in the first two games, also forced Notre Dame to become one-dimensional. "We did a good job in the running game," Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said. "There were a couple of plays wed like to get back, but they (Purdues defence) did a good job against the run." It was good enough to give Purdue the upper hand for three quarters. After jumping to a 10-0 lead, the Boilermakers answered every challenge, retaking the lead on B.J. Knaufs 18-yard TD reception just four minutes after Notre Dame had tied the score at 10. The defence, meanwhile, continued to force Notre Dame to small ball -- until Daniels broke through. The 6-foot-1 junior used his three-inch height advantage to outjump Antoine Lewis for the first TD catch, which tied the score at 17 with 14:47 left. When Purdues ensuing drive stalled, Rees went to Daniels on the first play. Daniels, who had beaten Purdues best cover cornerback, Ricardo Allen, caught the ball on the run, then stiff-armed Allen to the ground as he barely stayed in bounds. It was the longest pass play of both players careers and after standing up to a replay review, it went down as the ninth-longest in Notre Dame history. "The hairs on the back of my neck kind of stood up when I got close and I saw the hash marks," Daniels said. "I was just trying to make a play and trying to get as far away from the sideline as possible at the time." Three plays after that, Jackson picked off Henry and scored on the return. Purdue closed to 31-24 and had a chance to tie the score after recovering Amir Carlisles fumble at the Notre Dame 41. But the Irish defence forced a punt and the Boilers never got the ball again. "We just kept playing, we had to make a couple of plays," Kelly said. "Last week, Michigan made the plays. Tonight, we made the plays when we needed to."
