CORK, Ireland -- Graeme McDowell birdied four of his closing eight holes to join two-time runner-up Robert Rock in the lead early on day two of the Irish Open on Friday. Both players shot 5-under-par 66 to move to 8 under for the tournament in superb scoring conditions at the Fota Island course. McDowell, looking to win the Irish Open for the first time, birdied three holes in succession from his 11th, and birdied his 15th. It was his lowest 36-hole tally on European Tour in 15 months, since he was 11 under en route to a tie for third in last years Cadillac Championship at Doral. "My game still requires some work but I feel like as I play my way into the summer, I feel my golf swing, my short game, and my putting is starting to get stronger," he said. "So I am a feel player and Im a guy that needs to spend time on the golf course with a card in his pocket to see where hes at. "And coming off last weeks U.S. Open, pressure and expectations are not as high this week, and I feel very comfortable." Rock was also feeling at home. Five years ago in Baltray, Rock lost to then-rookie Shane Lowry in a playoff. Rocks only consolation was Lowrys amateur status meant he had to forfeit the 500,000 euros first prize cheque. A year ago, Rock was joint runner-up in Dublin to fellow Englishman Paul Casey. "It is more to do with the time of year (for me), as I played well at the start of the year but then struggled, and your confidence takes a bit of a bashing. But then you work hard and I seem to start to play well again and it all turns around," he said. Italys Marco Crespi (67) and Englands Matthew Nixon (65) shared third place in the clubhouse on 7 under. Overnight leader Mikko Ilonen of Finland, who set a course record with his opening 64, teed off in the afternoon. John Kelly Jersey . The Raptors had an early deadline Sunday, a dreaded afternoon game, and they left the bulk of their work until the last minute, as theyve done so many times before. Brandin Cooks Jersey . As deep as their roster is, they need their superstar. The Flames said the 19-year-old Monahans status is week to week. The team also announced Thursday that Wideman fractured his left hand in the previous nights 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Both players have been placed on the teams injured reserve list. Wideman will undergo surgery to have a pin placed in the hand and will be out six to eight weeks, according to general manager Jay Feaster. Calgary (8-12-4) is on the road in Anaheim on Friday and in Los Angeles on Sunday. With nine goals and six assists, Monahan is second in NHL rookie scoring behind Thomas Hertl of the San Jose Sharks. Monahan is also second in Flames scoring. He took a shot off the foot in practice Nov. 21, but played in Calgarys next two games. Monahan scored his ninth goal of the season against the Blackhawks, but his foot continued to be painful. A scan Thursday confirmed the fracture. "He will be re-evaluated at the beginning of next week and well have a better idea exactly what the time frame will be," Feaster told repporters Thursday.dddddddddddd "Its certainly not good news when these things happen. To lose a guy like Wideman thats a tough blow for the team. Obviously with Monny, the way Monnys been playing, its a tough guy to take out of your lineup." The injury bug has bitten the Flames hard this season. Captain and top defenceman Mark Giordano hasnt played since he broke his ankle during a game Oct. 21. He has started skating again and Feaster is hopeful the captain will be ready to play next week. Forward Curtis Glencross is out two to three weeks with a knee injury and forward T.J. Galiardi is day to day with back spasms. "Weve lost some significant players for a significant period of time," Feaster said. "Its important they dont become an excuse. Theyre not a crutch, no pun intended, to lean on. "You try and find a way to soldier on. We have to find ways to win games with the guys we do have." The Flames have called up forward Max Reinhart and Paul Byron from their American Hockey League affiliate in Abbotsford, B.C. Flames head coach Bob Hartley said that Reto Berra will start in net against the Ducks on Friday and Karri Ramo will play Sunday against the Kings.
